Task deck officer12/6/2023 ![]() An administrative task that safely would be possible to do on the Bridge Watch, traffic and passage permitting, would be updating stock and inventory and placing orders for spare parts. This area of responsibility involves A LOT of spare parts – gaskets, hoses, couplings, pins and a bunch of other items. Here’s an example for you – the Third Officer is besides a Watchkeeper also in charge of all Fire-Fighting Appliances. ![]() Who said this is a chance to lean back and sip coffee?Īll Officers have designated responsibilities outside of Watchkeeping, and these other tasks typically also involve administrative tasks to some extent. What I mean by this, is that on some watches where traffic density is non-existent and there is plenty of water around and below the vessel there is a good opportunity to catch up on administrative work. In fact on some voyages it can be 2-3 days of not seeing any other ships, hence bringing me back to my previous point – watchkeeping is DYNAMIC rather than fixed. Here’s an inside secret for you – the Navigator (OOW) isn’t spending all 4 hours with their eyes glued to the window or on the Radar. Assertiveness (taking action in due time and being proactive on the job).Risk assessment (do any of the activities currently ongoing pose a risk?).Vigilance (towards navigation, passage plan and traffic of other vessels).Maintaining the Watch is a DYNAMIC process, that in my experience involves these 3 CORE SKILLS: That’s the short version – as “fixed” as it may sound, there is a lot more to it than just that. Complying with Company and Statutory Requirements – essentially rules and procedures as set out by the Flag State and Shipping Company.Having the overall overview of vessel operation, and essentially the “point of contact” on board to ensure that the vessel operates smoothly and SAFELY.Maintaining a GMDSS watch (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System).Adhering to the Standing Orders as set out by the Master (I will be dedicating a separate post just for this!). ![]()
